Oldest prostitutes in Amsterdam retire at 70

Twin sisters said to be the oldest prostitutes in Amsterdam have retired after more than 50 years in the industry.

Louise and Martine Fokkens, 70, are quitting the city's famous red light district after sleeping with thousands of men, as they now believe they are too old for the world's oldest profession.

According to The Sun, Louise said that her arthritis now makes some sexual positions "too painful", while Martine admitted that the only punter she still attracts is an elderly man who visits for a weekly S&M session.

She said: "I couldn't give him up. He's been coming to me for so long like it's like going to church on a Sunday."

The pair, who were the subject of documentary Meet the Fokkens last year, have written a book about their time in the sex industry called The Ladies of Amsterdam.

They both became prostitutes in their late teens to make money after leaving violent relationships, but say the trade has been invaded by the "eastern European mafia" since prostitution was legalised.

Louise explained: "It is very different now. We used to sit in the windows with clothes on. Today, they are totally naked. There are few Dutch women and no sense of community these days."

Martine added: "The legalisation of brothels in 2000 has not improved prostitutes' lives. There is no point working just for tax. That is why the girls are working from the internet and from home - you are less likely to be spotted by the taxman."
